FBX

FBX is Autodesk's proprietary 3D file format widely used for exchanging animated models between DCC tools and game engines.

What is FBX?

FBX (Filmbox) is a proprietary 3D file format owned by Autodesk. It's one of the most widely supported interchange formats for 3D assets, especially for transferring animated models (with skeletons and blend shapes) between digital content creation tools like Maya and 3ds Max and game engines like Unity and Unreal. Because it preserves a model's rigging, it is the default for character animation handoff.

When to Use It

Reach for FBX when moving rigged, animated characters into Unity or Unreal animation pipelines, or when working inside Autodesk tools. For static models and web delivery, the open GLB format is the more modern, efficient choice; for 3D printing, use STL. Our export formats guide covers which to pick for each destination, and you can swap between them with the file converter.
