Roughness Map
A roughness map is a PBR texture that controls how smooth or rough a surface appears, determining the sharpness of reflections.
What is a Roughness Map?
A roughness map is a grayscale PBR texture that defines how rough or smooth each part of a surface is, controlling the sharpness of reflections. Black means perfectly smooth (mirror-like reflections); white means fully rough (matte, diffuse). Gray values fall in between, with polished chrome sitting near 0 and unfinished clay near 1. Like every map in the material, it is aligned to the mesh through its UV mapping.
Why It Matters
Roughness is where materials come alive. Adding subtle variation, such as fingerprints on glass or worn edges on metal, is one of the most effective ways to make a PBR material look real rather than plastic. Paired with a normal map for physical detail, roughness sells the illusion of a real surface. For the full set of maps that make up a material, see our beginner's guide to 3D textures.
